Equipment To Bring
Rods
4- to 7-weight rods are used through the summer months.
Reels
Large-arbor reels do a wonderful job catching large trout. They hold plenty of line and have superior drag systems.
Lines
South American rivers near the Coyhaique region are very clear, giving both the angler and the fish superb visibility. Bright colored fly lines can and do spook fish. Dull-colored, olive or grey lines are preferred by the best anglers and guides. Long belly profile forward taper lines are best, giving the angler ability to cast a good length yet present the fly delicately.
Leaders
Fluorocarbon leaders give an advantage over copolymer leaders. Fluorocarbon has a light refraction index close to that of the water, rendering it almost invisible to the fish. It is also abrasion resistant and unaffected by UV while providing good knot strength.
Waders
During the summer months, many South American anglers wade wet. However, breathable Gortex waders are an essential piece of gear to bring along. They are very lightweight, dry and easy to walk in. Polypropylene, fleece-type or wool long johns underneath Gortex waders offer the best insulation for cool days on the river. Felt soled boots are a must.
